The Karnataka government has decided to remove Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner IAS officer Gaurav Gupta and replace him with IAS officer Tushar Giri Nath.
Meanwhile, Gupta will become the Additional Chief Secretary of the Infrastructure Department. Gupta was named BMC's Chief on April 1, 2021, during the second wave of the pandemic.
The transfer of 16 IAS officers has been ordered by the state government. Gupta's relocation comes ahead of the high-octane BBMP polls, the dates of which have yet to be announced. Karnataka will also have polls in 2023.
The BBMP has recently been in the news and has faced criticism from a variety of sources for poor infrastructure, which has resulted in a number of deaths, including those caused by potholes, un-asphalted roads, and water-filled underpasses, accidents caused by speeding BBMP trucks and even waterlogging.
Residents have expressed concern over the BBMP's failure to prevent such mishaps and ensure smooth administration. The local government has even caught the attention of the courts, which have issued many orders to fill potholes in the city and repair roadways, among other things.
