Market benchmarks fell for the third day running on Monday and ended nearly 1 percent lower amid a weak trend in global equities.
The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 518.64 points, or 0.84 percent, to 61,144.84. It fell 604.15 points, or 0.97 percent, throughout the day to 61,059.33.
The NSE Nifty slid 147.70 points, or 0.81 percent, to 18,159.95.
Reliance Industries, HDFC, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, Wipro, and Tata Steel were the major laggards in the Sensex pack.
Among the winners were Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Hindustan Unilever, and Power Grid.
In other Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai, and Hong Kong closed down, while Tokyo closed higher.
In the afternoon trade, European equity exchanges were trading in the red. On Friday, Wall Street finished better.
Brent crude was trading 0.91 percent lower at USD 86.82 a barrel on the international oil market.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded shares worth 751.20 crores on Friday, as per exchange data.
