Tesla CEO Elon Musk has denied having an affair with Google co-founder Sergey Brin's wife Nicole Shanahan, despite allegations that the affair led Brin to sell his shares in Musk's companies.
Musk, who also owns SpaceX, responded on Twitter, saying the allegation is absolutely false and that he and Brin are friends who went to a party together last night. He stated that he had only met Shanahan twice in three years and that there was nothing romantic between the two.
“This is total bs. Sergey and I are friends and were at a party together last night! I’ve only seen Nicole twice in three years, both times with many other people around. Nothing romantic,” Musk wrote.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk and Shanahan had a short affair in Miami in early December, after which Brin, 48, filed for divorce (in January). This also marks the end of Musk's 51-year friendship with Brin, who helped the electric carmaker during the 2008 financial crisis.
According to a Bloomberg report citing the Journal, Brin recently urged his advisers to sell his personal investments in Musk's companies after learning about the affair.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk is the world's richest person, with a fortune of $242 billion. Brin is the eighth-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $94.6 billion.
The controversy is the most recent in a long line of revelations concerning Musk's personal life. He earlier became the father of twins born to a top executive at his artificial intelligence startup Neuralink.
Another of his companies, SpaceX, paid an employee $250,000 to settle a sexual harassment claim she made against Musk in 2016.
Musk has termed the allegations "utterly false" and intended to undermine his acquisition of Twitter Inc., which he is currently attempting to cancel.
