Advancing the battle to entice voters with promises of goodies ahead of the next state assembly elections, Punjab Congress chairman Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Monday that if his party is elected to power, women homemakers would get $2,000 per month.
Sidhu also offered homemakers eight free cooking gas cylinders every year. The state Congress president also pledged two-wheelers to females who enroll in universities for higher education, stating that 20,000 would be given to those who completed 12th school, 15,000 would be given to those who completed 10th grade, and 5,000 would be given to those who completed fifth grade. Sidhu's promises nearly match those of Aam Aadmi Party national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has promised a monetary reward of $1,000 to all women in Punjab, as well as up to 300 units of free domestic power per month, if his party wins elections in the poll-bound states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Goa.
Sidhu made the statements during a gathering in the Barnala area of Punjab. Sidhu made the remarks while speaking at the gathering, emphasizing the importance of strengthening women in the state.
"The Punjab government would provide 2,000 per month to women homemakers and eight (LPG) cylinders for free," he added. Sidhu announced his second pledge, saying that all females who graduate fifth grade, whether from rural or cities, would receive 5,000 rupees.
"As an incentive, females who complete the tenth grade will get $15,000, and girls who pass the 12th grade and choose to pursue further education will receive $20,000," he stated. He also offered computers to females who wanted to pursue higher education. He told the girls that they would be provided two-wheelers so that they could go to college. He also said that property transfers in the names of women would be free of charge. He also vowed to establish 28 women's skill development centers around the state.
