On Thursday, Mumbai awoke to a temperature of 17.9 degrees Celsius, the lowest morning of the season so far, after recording minimum temperatures of 18.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday. In previous statements, officials predicted that temperatures would continue to drop steadily and gradually until at least December 31.
"Now that some cold wave conditions have been felt in northern India, and because northerly winds are blowing across Maharashtra, temperatures in the northern Konkan will be somewhat lower on a daily basis." According to an official from the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional forecasting center in Mumbai, "we had been waiting for suitable winter conditions to develop in the north first."
Following the seven-day projection from the Indian Meteorological Department for Mumbai, the lowest night temperature is likely to drop to about 17 degrees Celsius by December 26 throughout the following week. Around the same time, the daytime maximum temperature is forecast to range between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. This will be followed by somewhat warmer weather over the first few months of the new calendar year.
According to the SAFAR network of monitoring stations, the city's air quality index (AQI) remained in the 'bad' category on Thursday morning at 276 (the same as the day before). Officials have issued a warning that pollution levels would rise once again when the weather drops. "For the next couple of weeks, it seems doubtful that the air quality index will demonstrate a persistent improvement. Dr. Gufran Beig, project director at SAFAR, stated that while strong winds may provide temporary relief, as the northerly winds drive the temperature down, there will be increased fog and a buildup of pollutants, particularly during the early morning hours.
