Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections were recently held, and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was victorious, is expected to decide on the next mayor of the state capital's civic body on Thursday, according to a statement issued on December 21 by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who announced the results of the election after the counting of votes had taken place.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee had stated on Tuesday that the party will meet at 2 p.m. on December 23 to elect the mayor. The TMC had won 134 out of the city's 144 council seats, with three independents who won their individual wards anticipated to join the Trinamool coalition.
The election for the position of mayor of the KMC took held on December 19. There were three wins for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the largest opposition party in West Bengal, and two wins for the Congress and the Left parties, respectively.
The Trinamool Congress received 92.36 percent of the vote in the general election.
Firhad Hakim, the former mayor of Kolkata who is now the transport minister of the eastern state and a close ally of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is considered the front-runner for the position.
It was the third important election to be held in West Bengal this year, with the Kolkata mayoral election being the third. In May, the TMC won its third straight assembly elections in this city, and in October, Mamata Banerjee won the assembly by-elections in Bhabanipur, ensuring that she would keep her position as chief minister of West Bengal. In addition, in November, Trinamool candidates won by historically large percentages in by-elections conducted for four assembly constituencies across the state of West Bengal.
