The Rajya Sabha adjourned for the third time that day, this time till 5 p.m., amid a storm of protest from opposition members over a variety of topics, including the suspension of 12 members of Parliament and the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
During a debate on the NDPS (Amendment) Bill, 2021, members of the opposition continued to scream slogans at the microphone. Speaking on the bill were several representatives from various political parties, including YSRCP member Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and BJD member Prashanta Nanda, among others.
When Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan rose to speak on the bill, there were heated exchanges between her and the treasury benches, prompting Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the Chair, to adjourn the House until 5 p.m. The House was adjourned until 5 p.m. because of the heated exchanges between Bachchan and the Treasury benches.
An alleged member of the treasury bench made a personal comment about her and her children, according to reports. Responding to him, Jaya Bachchan, in a hostile tone, stated: "Apke bure din aaenge... "I curse you," I say.
In an ironic twist, Jaya Bachchan's outburst occurred on the same day that her daughter-in-law, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, was called by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Panama Papers leak investigation.
According to sources, the 'Guru' actress has arrived at the Mumbai headquarters of the Enforcement Directorate.
The testimony of the 48-year-old actress will be recorded by the agency in connection with suspicions of stashing cash overseas in violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, which was passed in 1999. The actress had already provided documents of the overseas payments that were the subject of the inquiry.
