The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange weather warning for Jammu and Kashmir for the days of January 7 and 8, citing adverse weather in the Valley.
In accordance with the National Weather Service, showers and/or precipitation are likely to intensify gradually as the day proceeds today. The weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout the evenings of January 7 and 8, resulting in strong to extremely heavy rainfall and/or snowfall, according to forecasts.
Conditions, on the other hand, are predicted to progressively improve beginning the morning of January 9.
The IMD has issued an avalanche (landslide) warning in susceptible regions of the Valley as a result of the orange alert, and it has also stated that inclement weather may have an impact on surface and air traffic in January 8.
The Met Department has advised residents of the Valley not to travel to avalanche-prone locations, based on data that shows the calamity is most often precipitated by heavy snowfall, according to the department. People have also been reminded to adhere to traffic advisories and to ensure that sufficient ventilation is maintained within their homes.
On Wednesday, heavy snowfall blanketed the valley's upper levels, as well as the tourist destinations of Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam, and the northern and southern regions of Kashmir. The situation slightly improved on Thursday, but a new forecast from the IMD suggests that it may deteriorate further.
Weather conditions have severely disrupted aviation operations in the Valley, with numerous flights being delayed or canceled over the previous two days as a result of the bad weather. According to a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday, as many as six flights were canceled during the day and 35 planes were able to run regularly as a result of the severe weather conditions.
