Derek O'Brien, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday for the remainder of the Winter Session of the Parliament due to his 'unruly behavior' in the House. After allegedly hurling the Rajya Sabha Rule Book in the direction of the Chair during a discussion on The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, on December 21, the TMC MP was suspended from his position.

Derek O'Brien has been suspended from the House of Commons on several occasions in recent years. The TMC leader was suspended for causing chaos in the House of Representatives during the passage of controversial farm legislation that was ultimately repealed following months of farmer protests.

Derek O'Brien took to Twitter to explain that he had been suspended yet again for protesting against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he claimed was "making a mockery" of the Parliament by "bulldozing" the electoral reforms bill, in the hope that it would be repealed as soon as possible.

According to the TMC leader, the last time he was suspended from the Republican Party was when the government was "BULLDOZING #FarmLaws." "We're all aware of what transpired after that."

Deputy Speaker Sushmita Dev, a Trinamool MP who recently switched from the Congress party, said that suspending members of Parliament is the "new normal," but that "what else can we expect from a dictatorship?"

This bill, which has been passed by both houses of Congress and seeks to link electoral roll data with the Aadhaar ecosystem, is known as the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote in the midst of a walkout by members of the opposition. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday, despite the government's refusal to refer it to a standing committee as demanded by the opposition.
