Delhi will receive its own Teachers University; bill to be filed in Assembly shortly

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Cabinet has accepted a proposal to create the 'Delhi Teachers University'.

After the cabinet meeting, Kejriwal remarked in a news conference, ''This University would prepare highly certified and well-trained teachers in Delhi itself. As per the pledge of the Delhi Government, 'Delhi Teachers University' Bill 2021 would be tabled before the Delhi Vidhan Sabha in the next session.''

"Delhi Teachers Institution' will be a public university focused on developing top-quality Teachers for the city throughout all school levels. This University will provide among others, 4-year Integrated Teacher Education Programmes like BA-BEd, BSc-Bed, to assist educate a new generation of teachers," he stated.

Kejriwal stated that the students of this University would be linked with Delhi Government schools for the full duration of their study to receive hands-on experience with a heavy emphasis on action research.

"This will assist students to get superior practical understanding in addition to academic information. Admission to the new University will start for the academic session 2022-23.''

''Delhi Teachers University will be a hub for excellence in teacher development at both pre-service and in-service in the fields of education studies, leadership, and policy. It will participate in world-class teaching and research in developing areas of teacher education to attain excellence in school education through national and worldwide collaborations. It would strive towards bridging the gap between practice, research, and policy in teacher training while continually interacting with the dynamic notion and reality of excellent education in the city of Delhi, stated the Chief Minister.

The Delhi government is intending to recruit globally known academics as Vice-Chancellor and Professors of this institution. The University will be put up at Bakkarwala. It will function as a multidisciplinary academic institute that brings together such stakeholders as practising and aspiring teachers, teacher educators, parents, administrators, policy strategists, and content creators, in a discussion through a range of programmes and activities.
