Ahmedabad, the state capital and largest city in Gujarat, reported the lowest temperature of 9.2°C, which is almost 4°C below the typical. The city has experienced single-digit low temperatures for the second consecutive day, indicating the start of a cold wave that is unusual for this area of the nation. The temperature in Gandhinagar, India's twin city, has dipped to 6.5°C for the second day in a row. The temperature in both the capital city and the Sabarmati town has dropped to single digits for the previous four days in a row.
Around the winter solstice, the city has set prior records as well, with temperatures falling below the monthly average of 13.4°C. Ahmedabad recorded the lowest temperature of 7.4°C on 15th December 2014, which was the lowest in the recent decade. It also has a history of dropping into the single digits during the second part of December, albeit for a brief period of time. The cold air from the northern plains that intrudes into the state's alluvial terrain causes the mercury levels to plunge for brief periods of time before soon returning to favorable weather conditions throughout the state.
In recent days, the whole northern plains have been engulfed by searing cold, which has now spread to the northern and central areas of the state. Now, two western disturbances are moving over northern India, beginning on the 23rd of December and lasting until the 28th of December. The seasonal anticyclone above Rajasthan, which has been fanning chilly air across the state of Gujarat, is being pushed further westward... For the following several days, the winds will change direction and become more favorable for warmer weather.
The cold wave conditions in the capital of Gandhinagar and the neighboring city of Ahmedabad are not expected to subside anytime soon. The gradual rise in temperature, which will reach 13-15°C by the weekend, will help to alleviate the extended chilly conditions that have gripped the two sister cities. For the bustling towns of Gujarat, a pleasant warm Christmas followed by a cold new year's eve appears to be in the cards.
