An elderly woman who was rescued from under the debris after a four-storey residential building collapsed the previous evening in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has died from her injuries. Begum Haider, 72, is the mother of Zishan Haider, a former Congress spokesperson. She is the first victim of this incident.
Haider had been rescued a few hours before and was in severe condition after being rescued from the rubble. The relief workers rushed her to the ambulance.
So far, 15 people have been rescued, including Haider. The remaining injured, including those who were taken from the collapsed site on Tuesday evening, are being treated at different hospitals in Lucknow.
Although the reason of the collapse has not been determined, officials have said that the building, which had up to 12 flats and two penthouses on the top floor, was illegal and that the layout map was not approved by the builder. Lucknow divisional commissioner (Ms) Roshan Jacob said that action would be taken against the builder in this regard.
Uttar Pradesh DGP DS Chauhan has also echoed Jacob, adding that “strictest action” will be taken against whoever is found responsible for the incident.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has set up a three-member probe committee comprising Jacob, additional commissioner of police Piyush Mordia and chief engineer of Public Works Department.
