Students wearing hijab (headcover) were permitted to enter the college campus of the government PU college in the Kundapura area of the Udupi district of Karnataka on Monday, according to news agency ANI. According to the ANI report, however, these students would be seated in separate classrooms from the rest of the class. "The situation in Kundapura has been brought under control, and students are being permitted to enter institutions and the campus even if they are wearing a hijab," according to ANI, which quoted ST Siddalingappa, assistant superintendent of police in Udupi.
According to him, "there is no law and order situation in Kundapur."
Muslim students have been staging a sit-in outside the college campus since Friday when the principal refused to let them in because they were wearing hijab, a headcover worn by devout Muslim women. Other students, some of whom were dressed in saffron shawls, staged counter-protests when they arrived at the campus. The students had stated that they would wear the shawls if hijab-wearing girls were permitted to attend class.
Meanwhile, in response to the news on Monday, senior Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor resorted to Twitter to express his displeasure with the college's management. "Are you looking for breaking news from Karnataka, or are you looking for heartbreaking news? As far as secular activities such as general education are concerned since when has religious segregation been permitted in our country? Is it possible that this college does not have a copy of the Constitution?" Tharoor tweeted in reaction to the ANI update.
Students will only be permitted to wear the uniform approved by the school administration, according to a circular issued by the pre-university education board on Saturday. The board also stated that no other religious rituals will be permitted at institutions.
Earlier in the day, two people were taken into custody for possessing a knife in close proximity to the protesting students. "Two individuals have been apprehended, while three more are absconding. We're attempting to track them down. One of them happened to be in possession of a blade. They are not natives, they hail from Gangolli. They have been taken into custody by the authorities. The issue is currently being investigated "According to an ANI report, Siddalingappa made the statement.
